Growers of asparagus in Cornwall say they are harvesting the crop earlier than ever before.

They believe the big freeze before Christmas and the warm, dry spring are responsible for its sudden appearance.

Local growers say the crop is nearly a month earlier than usual.

The asparagus season is very short, lasting for about eight weeks. For many years it was considered to be a rich man’s vegetable.

Cornish asparagus grower John Keeler said: “We’re very surprised. You can see down the rows it’s growing properly. We’ve had some warm weather and moisture too.

‘Exhaust the plant’

“We get Bulgarian and Romanian pickers. They are due at the end of April which is sometimes too early. This year we’ve been completely caught out.”

The early arrival of the vegetable means the asparagus season in Cornwall has created a balancing act for Mr Keeler and other local growers.

“The big disadvantage of it coming so early means you can only have a limited harvest.

“If you try to extend the season too far you will then exhaust the plant and that could affect the season next year. By the beginning of June our season will be over.”

The British Asparagus Growers Association said imported asparagus was available from different parts of the world all year round, but British asparagus was popular for its flavour and freshness.

Don’t you just love it when elected officials get a chance to show their true colors? You know, the moment at which all that stuff about ideology and the “free market” gets cast aside and the cold, hard fact that, for many, “it’s all about the Benjamins” is brought into sharp focus.

It appears that General Assembly observers will be treated to such a moment next week when the high-cost loan industry – i.e. many of the same people that brought you the mortgage meltdown – will be over on Jones Street with the best lobbying team and P.R. campaign that money can buy to support their new “wish list” bill.

Under the proposal, the “consumer finance” industry (i.e. storefront lenders who are already permitted to charge a combination of interest and fees that adds up to 54% APR) would get the go-ahead to jack those rates into triple digits. Conservative estimates place the hit on lower-income North Carolina consumers at an additional $90 million per year.

There are so many reasons that this is a flawed proposal that it’s hard to know where to start, but here are a few.

-The main groups pushing this proposal are two of the nation’s biggest and baddest financial industry actors – Citi and AIG. Although the lobbyists will trot out some mom and pop store owners, these giant corporations dominate the consumer finance industry in North Carolina.

-The N.C. Commissioner of Banks has thoroughly studied this “industry” and decided it’s already quite profitable and undeserving of rate hikes. Indeed, it even made a profit at the peak of the recession – a time when no other financial institutions were making money.

-Interest rates are at all-time lows. Why in the world would it make sense to raise rates at such a time?

-The notion that the industry needs higher rates so that it can lend more money to more people makes no sense. What this is saying is that consumer finance borrowers are already so stressed that they’re having trouble keeping up with their loans at current rates. Raising rates to 100+% sure ain’t gonna help with that. These people don’t need loans – they need better jobs, affordable housing and health care.

There are dozens of other reasons, but the bottom line is this:

This is one of the worst ideas to come down the road this session at the G.A. during a session full of bad ideas. There is no real reason for lawmakers to even consider this kind of nonsense except for their desire to please a big industry with a fat campaign checkbook.

Interestingly and happily, as in years past the debate over small loans does not always break down on partisan lines; some confused D’s support it and many R’s are queasy about it – some in powerful positions. Ultimately, the fate of this proposal seems likely to come down to whether enough Republicans are willing to listen to their consciences rather than the small handful of members in their caucus who are pushing the bill on behalf of the industry.

Man not in gang, family claims

Posted by admin

His family said they had kept Valdez, 25, from hanging out with the wrong people and joining a gang. And on the eve of his sentencing, they insist he never did.

There were no minced words at home from Valdez’s grandfather, Robert Infante, on the subject of gangs in Casa Blanca, his mother Rebecca Valdez said.

“My dad was always telling him, ‘You don’t join no gangs — ever.’ ”

It was not supposed to turn out like this.

“He is not the monster they make him out to be,” she said. “It upsets me. People need to know: He wasn’t a gang member.”

Rebecca Valdez and her mother June Infante declined in an interview to discuss specifics of the case. Valdez, through his mother, declined to be interviewed.

This is not about a wrongful conviction: On the witness stand during his first trial, Valdez said under questioning, “Yes. I did the shooting.”

When Deputy District Attorney Samah Shouka asked Valdez about any gang affiliations, he denied them, even when confronted with statements he had previously made to law enforcement officers that affirmed gang alignments.

Valdez testified that he got “Casa Blanca” tattoos on his forearms when he was 15 or 16 because “I grew up in Casa Blanca, and been there all my life.”

Under the law, prosecutors do not have to prove Valdez is an actual gang member — only that he committed the crime with the intent to benefit a gang.

The fatal gunfire at Maximiliano’s home was in retaliation for a shooting on Christmas Eve that wounded a gang member, whom prosecutors said was Valdez’s friend.

Valdez testified he drank a lot of beer and remembered little of how he spent that Christmas, other than the shooting, which he claimed was meant to “scare” its intended victim, and a caught-on-security-camera beer robbery where he punched the victim outside a neighborhood market.

He did not recall confronting a passerby in another car shortly after the shooting, jacking the shotgun and asking the driver, “Where are you from, homeboy?”

Jacqueline Torres, Maximiliano’s mother, said in her testimony that she remembers the night too well. “The way that his life was taken away, it’s the most terrible thing that can happen in someone’s life.”

Valdez’s family said he was raised in the Family Praise Fellowship Church on Madison Avenue, where the family regularly attends services and Martin was a member of the Royal Rangers, a Boy Scout-style organization in the church. He also was a member of the church’s youth group after that.

“He was born and raised in the church, up until the time he was a teenager he was involved with the church,” said Infante.

Valdez ran into trouble as a juvenile in 2001 when he fired a rifle into the air at Villegas Park. He spent some time in juvenile hall, then took firefighter training in Butte County and was hired by 18 as a firefighter in South Dakota.

He seemed to be on the right track, and aspiring to bigger things, when he returned home to his family in August 2005 with training certificates and letters of recommendation from his supervisors.

“He always dreamed of being a firefighter,” said Infante. She said he researched for training and job opportunities on his own. “Every step, he looked it up,” she said. “Martin is a hard-working, dependable and reliable firefighter. With every task that is given to him, Martin has never come up short…” wrote Errol D. CrowGhost Jr., who was at the time foreman of the Bear Mountain Hand Crew.

When he came home, he got a warehouse job, his mother said. “He really didn’t hang out with anybody. It was all about his work and his car,” she said.

Shouka, the prosecutor, said Valdez did appear to have a good upbringing.

“They brought him up to know the difference between right and wrong. He seems to have had a very nice and loving family,” she said. “But someone who is raised with a devout and loving family is more culpable than someone who is not.”

Christmas in February

It’s been 62 days since Santa stopped in Malverne and West Hempstead to deliver presents to the good local boys and girls, but just this week our photographer spotted the red-suited Christmas icon still hanging around the neighborhood. (And his reindeer too!)

Blame it on the storms that have dropped several inches of snow on the area since Dec. 26 for preventing your neighbors from taking down their holiday decorations. Or maybe some stand behind the belief that their red bows, wreaths and wicker reindeer are not specific to Christmas, but rather fall under the “It’s for winter.” clause. (If that’s the case you may continue to see this decor as late as March 20, the first day of spring.)

We’re not judging but we did want to share the photos here. Click through the gallery to the right and feel free to upload your own pictures of your neighbors’ holiday lawn ornaments or proudly display your own outdoor celebration of Christmas in February.

You are not the only person who has complained about the change in the hotel lobby’s Christmas decorations. Many were expecting the lobby of old with the canopy of angel hair and the Christmas ornaments and decorated trees.

The original Roosevelt Hotel had this name from 1923 to 1965. Before that, it was the Grunewald Hotel, and in the 1960s it became the Fairmont Hotel. But at all times it was quintessentially New Orleans. Throughout the rich history of the Roosevelt Hotel, it was visited by presidents, royalty, movie stars, musicians and athletes.

It also housed one of the best nightclubs in America, The Blue Room, a truly classy venue for dining, dancing and listening to performers like Frank Sinatra. Going to The Blue Room was a special treat for anyone, but especially for kids who got to sit up front near the entertainers.

The Roosevelt was Huey Long’s favorite hotel in New Orleans, partly because of the Sazerac Bar with its Ramos Gin Fizzes. Long was elected governor in 1928, and one of his projects was to build a highway from Baton Rouge to New Orleans that cut nearly 40 miles off the journey. It also shortened the time it took the governor to get to the Roosevelt Hotel and a Ramos Gin Fizz.

For ordinary folks who never saw Huey Long, The Blue Room or the Sazerac Bar, there was the annual tradition of walking through the block-long lobby during the Christmas season. It was magical, even for adults.

The Christmas decorating tradition at the Roosevelt dates to the 1940s, when the hotel created an angel hair lobby by covering the ceiling with white angel hair, glowing lights and hanging ornaments — and filling the lobby with Christmas trees, toys, wrapped presents, elves, angels and a child-size gingerbread house.

When the hotel reopened as the Roosevelt, many people were eager to revisit the lobby. In the new Christmas display, the angel hair was replaced by a canopy of white birch branches decorated with lights and flocked, decorated fir trees.

The last time Kewanee had new decorations for Christmas on the main drag was 1991.
Those wreaths just finished their 20th year of service, said Mark Mikenas, executive director of the Kewanee Chamber of Commerce. The number of working decorations has been dwindling the past several years, he said.
A committee of volunteers — Diane DeMay, Duane Gillespie, Gailyn Heidemann, Doug Hilgendorf, Steve Looney, Mary Menard, Mikenas, Brock Tumbleson and Bob VerHeecke — is working to raise the estimated $40,000 needed for new decorations.
They will be calling on the business community for donations to purchase the new scroll with hanging lantern decorations.
The goal is to raise enough money to install decorations from 10th street south to Farm King.
The drive began with a cheeseburger in paradise night at the Elks Clubroom in November of last year to gather some awareness that the present decorations which were installed days earlier needed a facelift.
More than $2,000 was raised at that event.
In 2010 only 60 percents of the older wreath decorations were useable due to wiring issues, wind damage, breakage and other causes.
The annual cost of rewiring and installing new bulbs is $1,200 and rising every year.
Each of the new custom-made decorations will cost $395. Some new hardware will also be needed to install the new decorations. Ninety decorations will be needed to complete the route planned.
While the focus of the committee will be on contacting the business community, anyone can help to meet the goal.
To contribute to the fund drive, contact the Kewanee Chamber of Commerce or any committee member. Donations may be designated in memory of or honor of individuals.
The fund drive has started and will run until June 15 so that the decorations can be ordered and delivered in early October for preparation and installation in November.
A contributor thank-you event will be held after the drive at a location and date to be determined.
Contributors will be recognized in the Star Courier, on the local radio stations and the chamber website, and a permanent list of donators at the chamber office.

your new National Christmas Tree

The new National Christmas Tree is here.

The tree was planted at the Ellipse on Saturday to replace its predecessor, which was toppled by strong winds in February.

The new tree is a Colorado blue spruce that stands 26 and a half feet tall, according to the National Park Service. It’s from a tree nursery in New Jersey.

NPS said horticulturists and staff had been preparing the site for the new tree since the old tree was blown over. That tree was also a Colorado blue spruce and was planted in 1978.

The National Christmas Tree has been located on the northeast part of the Ellipse since 1973, but the tradition and annual tree-lighting ceremony began under President Calvin Coolidge in 1923, according to NPS. The trees had previously been located in various spots near the White House grounds.

Yesterday was mostly spent at the Spider House – an awesome venue with three stages. If you weren’t into a particular band you could walk to another stage and see what was happening there.

The mission for being at the Spider House was to see Butts (Seattle) and Christmas (Olympia). Butts-a two-piece comedy-punk group-played first. The band’s set is about half music and half banter, with the guitarist and drummer joking around before launching into one of their mostly under-a-minute songs. Topics covered: alcohol, cigarettes, taking naps, and the female tradition of doing the “wiggle dance” in the absence of toilet paper. Their set was short, sweet, and refreshing given the abundance of self-important bands that surrounded them.

Later, Christmas played a high-energy set of reverb-heavy surf-punk. Lead-singer Emily Beanblossom did well at establishing and maintaining a dancy, fun atmosphere, and watching the interplay between the guitarist and bassist was great.

However, my favorite discovery out of the ten or so bands I saw at the Spider House was a duo called Carletta Sue Kay, a duo out of San Francisco. One man on guitar, the other on a microphone-a mountain of a man, wearing tights, a wig, and a skirt. The band’s music could best be described as torch songs, but with a bit of an edge. The singer had a great, expressive voice. It was the kind of voice that inspired applause breaks mid-song. They closed with a Gladys Knight and the Pips cover and brought the house down.

They had so much fun in their Christmas show on Broadway in December 2010, Donny and Marie Osmond will take their holiday-themed sibling act on the road, playing Donny and Marie – Christmas in Chicago Dec. 6-24.

The performers known for their TV series and family holiday specials in the 1970s will play (with musicians and ensemble performers) at the Oriental Theatre in Chicago. This will be their first time together on a Chicago stage.

Donny Osmond began his career in entertainment at the age of five, and by 13 had already collected 18 gold records, eventually earning a grand total of 33 throughout his career, with sales of over 80 million albums. He starred in Andrew Lloyd Weber’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat for six years and 2,000 performances. A woman who failed to return to jail in Rapid City after a judge allowed her to spend Christmas with her daughters has been sentenced to five years in prison.

Judge Mary Thorstenson had granted 35-year-old Gena Heffner’s request for a 45-hour furlough to spend the holiday with her children after learning that one had leukemia. The Rapid City Journal reports that at the time, Heffner was jailed for violating probation on a grand theft charge.

After she was back in custody she pleaded guilty to escape. Heffner’s attorney asked Thorstenson to sentence her to probation and drug treatment. The judge instead ordered the prison term and drug treatment. Heffner must serve at least one-third of her sentence, and faces additional charges for a second probation violation and petty theft.
